Jamaat Expels Satkhira MP Gazi Nazrul Over Viral Video

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam following an internal investigation into allegations of what the party described as “moral lapses” after a controversial video went viral on social media.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council held at 4:00pm on Wednesday at the official residence of the Opposition Leader on Mintoo Road in Dhaka.

Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman chaired the meeting.

According to the party, an organisational investigation into allegations reported by various media outlets found evidence of “moral lapses” involving Gazi Nazrul Islam.

Based on the findings, the council decided to expel him from the party, Jamaat said in a statement.

The party added that it would immediately inform the Election Commission about his expulsion.

Earlier on Wednesday, local residents staged a protest procession in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira demanding the removal of the lawmaker.

The procession, organised under the banner of Shyamnagar Sachetan Nagorik, began around noon and moved through the main roads of the upazila before ending at the Shyamnagar Press Club premises, where protesters later burned an effigy of the MP.

A video circulated on social media on Monday night allegedly showed the Satkhira-4 lawmaker in an intimate situation with a woman inside a room, triggering widespread controversy.

Amid the allegations, Gazi Nazrul Islam said in a Facebook post that the woman seen in the video was his second wife.
