Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq

Dhaka, Apr 26 -- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq was a true leader of all people, regardless of religion or caste, including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians.

In a message marking the 64th death anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla on Monday, the Prime Minister recalled Fazlul Huq as one of the most distinguished leaders in the political history of undivided Bengal.

He said Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq was one of the few notable leaders Bangladesh has had.

The Prime Minister expressed deep respect for the late leader, recognising his lasting contribution to the region's political development.

He said that by presenting the historic Lahore Resolution in 1940, Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq began a new chapter in the political history of the subcontinent. Political historians of Bengal still discuss his historic Lahore Resolution positively. His wise and strong leadership had a lasting influence on the politics of the region.

A K Fazlul Huq was a friend of the neglected peasant community of Bengal. He was the first to realise that the politics of undivided Bengal was closely linked with its agriculture-based economy. Through his vision, he brought the interests of farmers into the political structure.

As Prime Minister of undivided Bengal in 1937, he played an important role in implementing pro-farmer and pro-worker policies. He also took steps to make the administration more accessible to ordinary people. At the same time, he contributed to the expansion of education and helped bring marginalised people into the mainstream of development.

PM Tarique Rahman said Fazlul Huq was not only a leader of the peasant community but also a respected leader in all-India politics. His sensitivity, compassion and firm political stance took him to a high position in national politics.

Sher-e-Bangla’s political philosophy is still relevant in today’s political reality. The Prime Minister also prayed for the peace of his departed soul. - UNB
