Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

India on Friday said it is reviewing Bangladesh’s request to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, noting that the matter is being handled through established legal and judicial procedures.

Responding to a question at a regular briefing, the spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the request is currently under examination and that New Delhi will continue to engage constructively with all concerned parties. This marks the first official response since the issue was raised by Bangladesh’s BNP-led government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The extradition request was formally conveyed earlier this month during talks between Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi.

Hasina has been sentenced to death by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal.

On a separate issue, the Indian side said it is closely monitoring political developments in Bangladesh, including efforts in parliament to ratify the ban imposed on the Awami League by the interim government.

The spokesperson also noted that both countries have expressed interest in maintaining constructive engagement and strengthening bilateral ties. Discussions are expected to continue through existing diplomatic channels, with follow-up meetings likely in the near future.
