Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Arrested in Dhaka

Former Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was arrested in Dhaka early Tuesday and later shown arrested in a case linked to the July Movement.

A special team of the Detective Branch (DB) detained her from the capital’s Dhanmondi area following a raid based on secret information, police said.

Joint Commissioner (DB-North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Rabiul Islam Bhuiyan, said Shirin Sharmin was wanted in several cases filed with different police stations in the capital after 5 August 2024.

He said she would be produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka later in the day.

Shirin Sharmin stepped down as Speaker on 2 September 2024, 27 days after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government.

She was elected Speaker on 30 April 2013 after former Speaker Abdul Hamid assumed the presidency.

Shirin Sharmin also served as a Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.
