Former World Bank Vice President and co-chair of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NGIC), Dr Ismail Serageldin, has called on the youth of Bangladesh to pursue their dreams, embrace innovation, and take the lead in transforming society through social entrepreneurship.

“Follow your dreams, believe in them, and go do it,” said Dr Serageldin, who is currently visiting Dhaka to attend the 15th edition of Social Business Day.

A long-standing friend of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, Dr Serageldin praised his pioneering work in microcredit, which empowered even the poorest to escape poverty with dignity.

He emphasised the power of the younger generation, raised in a digital world, to harness technology not for monopolistic gain, but for empowering communities and fostering inclusive development.

“They see the world differently. Let them dream—sometimes what seems impossible turns out to be possible,” he said.

Recalling his early collaboration with Professor Yunus in the late 1980s, Dr Serageldin said, “It’s not just about credit. It’s about the dignity of human beings.”

While refraining from commenting on local politics, he expressed strong faith in Professor Yunus’s integrity. “If anyone can be trusted to uphold honesty and guide a fair transition, it is Professor Yunus.”

Praising the resilience of the Bangladeshi people, Dr Serageldin said significant progress has been made but stressed the importance of long-term vision. “The question is: where are we heading? Climate change and sea level rise remain serious threats.”

He added, “Bangladesh is now well positioned for its next transformation phase. Considering where it started and how far it has come, there’s every reason for hope—especially with Professor Yunus helping to guide the way.”

Wishing Professor Yunus a happy birthday on June 28, Dr Serageldin said, “It’s wonderful to see him still going strong. His smile and confidence continue to inspire. Bangladesh is fortunate to have him.”

Dr Serageldin’s global contributions in poverty reduction, sustainability, and innovation have shaped major institutions and policies. He has received numerous international honours, including the Grameen Foundation Lifetime Commitment Award, Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences’ Public Welfare Medal.
