Safe Return and Health Checks
"The 29 fishermen, who were taken by the Arakan Army while fishing in the Naf River, have now safely returned. They are undergoing health checks, and after the necessary procedures, they will be handed over to their families," said Sheikh Ehsan Uddin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Teknaf.
The return of the fishermen was facilitated by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), who ensured their safe passage back to the country.
Identified Fishermen
Among the returning group, ten fishermen have been identified as Md. Kala Mia (37), Md. Nurul Alam (39), Abdul Rahman (19), Md. Abul Kalam Ahmed (29), Md. Lalu (11), Md. Kabir Ahmed (43), Mohammad Yunus (23), Nurul Islam (34), Md. Lutfor Rahman (23), and Rahim Ullah (21). All are residents of Shah Porir Dwip, Majherpara. The identities of the remaining fishermen have yet to be confirmed.
Background of the Incident
The fishermen had accidentally crossed the border while fishing on February 11 and 20 and were captured by the Arakan Army, a group operating in the region. They were aboard six motorized boats when they were detained.
Diplomatic Efforts Underway
Bangladesh authorities, in collaboration with both the Myanmar government and the Arakan Army, worked to secure the safe release of the fishermen. Home Adviser sources emphasized the importance of strategic engagement with the Arakan Army to safeguard Bangladesh's interests in the region.
