Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday urged traders to keep prices reasonable as Ramadan begins on Thursday, warning that profiteering would deepen public hardship during the holy month.

In a televised address to the nation, he described Ramadan as a time of self-purification and said its spirit should be reflected in economic conduct as well. “If we truly embrace self-discipline, people’s suffering should not increase during this month,” he said.

Noting that some businesses tend to seek excessive profits during Ramadan, the prime minister called on traders not to exploit the heightened demand for essential goods. He urged them to ensure that daily necessities remain affordable for ordinary citizens.

He said the government’s approach toward businesses of all sizes is balanced, aiming to protect both entrepreneurs and consumers. Authorities, he added, are ready to consider suggestions or complaints from stakeholders to maintain market stability.

Emphasising the government’s mandate to safeguard public welfare, he reiterated a commitment to dismantle corrupt syndicates and irregular practices across sectors, expressing hope that these efforts would bring lasting relief to consumers.

Extending Ramadan greetings, he described the month as a period for reflection, discipline and responsibility. He also acknowledged the needs of fasting Muslims, saying uninterrupted supplies of gas, electricity and water during sehri, iftar and tarawih prayers have been ordered.

Calling for restraint in resource use, he said avoiding waste of utilities in offices, courts and homes is also part of religious duty. The prime minister added that ministers and lawmakers have been encouraged to lead by example in practising austerity during the month.
