The mausoleum of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was opened to the public on Thursday, allowing people from all walks of life to pay their respects.
Authorities opened the entrance at around noon at Zia Udyan in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Soon after, BNP leaders and activists, along with ordinary citizens, began arriving at the mausoleum premises to offer tributes and prayers.
A large number of visitors were seen waiting patiently near barricades at the Bijoy Sarani intersection. As entry was limited due to crowd management, many people offered prayers from the roadside, expressing their respect while standing outside the burial ground.
Former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar visited the site earlier in the day. He offered munajat (special prayers) at the graves of both late president Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia.
Sources said the park entrance had earlier remained restricted because of ongoing renovation work at Zia Udyan. With the completion of major work, the authorities decided to reopen the mausoleum area for public access.
To ensure law and order, a strong security presence has been deployed across the park. Alongside police, members of other law enforcement and security agencies are on duty to maintain safety and manage the growing number of visitors.
