As roughly half of Dhaka’s population heads out for the festivities, those remaining have enjoyed a rare reprieve from the usual congestion, with smooth, hassle-free travel to visit family and friends. Commuters are easily navigating the city in private vehicles, rickshaws, and auto-rickshaws, without the typical rush-hour chaos.
On Eid day itself (Monday), the contrast was stark. Traffic police presence was light, with only a few officers stationed at key locations such as Bijoy Sarani, the Prime Minister’s Office, and Jahangir Gate. Other important intersections, including Mohammadpur Beribadh, Allah Karim, Asad Gate, and Khejurbagan Roundabout, were largely unattended.
In the absence of adequate law enforcement, some young motorcyclists took advantage of the quiet streets, riding recklessly without helmets. Many were spotted carrying more than two passengers, most of whom appeared to be between 18 and 25 years old. At around 2:30 PM, a motorcycle with three riders sped dangerously through Mirpur 12’s Pallabi Bus Stand, heading toward the Mirpur 10 Circle. Despite onlookers’ warnings, the rider showed no signs of slowing down. While no accidents occurred, the potential for danger was clear.
Similar reckless behavior was observed in areas like Mohammadpur, Basila, Shyamoli, and Gulshan, where motorcyclists ignored traffic signals and transported passengers, including children, without proper safety gear.
Historically, Eid holidays see a surge in motorcycle accidents due to reckless driving, and while no major incidents had been reported by midday Monday, safety concerns persist. To mitigate the risk, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has implemented speed bumps and roadblocks at key intersections like Gulshan Avenue and Road 55. However, other critical routes, such as those in Agargaon, have not been similarly reinforced.
In Gulshan, many bikers were spotted without helmets, prompting concern from local traffic officials. A senior officer from the Gulshan Traffic Division, speaking anonymously, acknowledged the issue but assured the public that law enforcement is closely monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, a Tejgaon traffic division officer stated, "Wherever violations occur, our officers will take action. No one breaking the law will be spared."
As the Eid celebrations continue, authorities urge all motorists to adhere to traffic laws in order to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of the public during this festive season.
