The government will procure a total of 8.5 lakh tonnes of paddy and rice from the domestic market during the current Aman season to ensure fair prices for farmers and maintain food security.

Of the total target, the government will purchase 3 lakh tonnes of paddy directly from farmers at Tk 35 per kg.

It will also procure 5 lakh tonnes of parboiled rice at Tk 49 per kg and 50,000 tonnes of non-parboiled rice at Tk 48 per kg.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee on Sunday.

Food Minister Afroza Khanam disclosed the decision while talking to reporters at the Secretariat after the meeting.

Paddy procurement will begin on November 14 while rice collection on December 1, reports UNB.

The procurement drive for both Aman paddy and rice will continue until February 28 next year.
