Over 50 people, including several policemen, were injured as garment workers clashed with police in Savar of Dhaka on Wednesday while pressing for their demand for a monthly minimum wage of Tk 30,000.

During the clashes, protesters set fire to a vehicle belonging to the officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station at Padmar Moro of Hemayetpur.

A group of garment workers took to the Dhaka-Aricha highway at the intersection and blocked the road near Hemayetpur bus stand around 9:30am, halting vehicular movement.

When police tried to disperse them, a chase and counter-chase took place between them.

The situation soon turned violent as workers hurled brickbats at police, forcing police to lob tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

At one stage, the workers vandalised and set fire to a police vehicle.

The mayhem left over 50 people injured. The injured include Savar OC Saiful Alam and several other policemen, and four local journalists, said Inspector (operation) of the police station Abdus Sabur.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel remained deployed in Hemayetpur and other industrial areas, maintaining security along the Dhaka-Aricha Highway and around garment factories.

Meanwhile, workers from garment factories in Jamgora, Narsinghapur, Kuturia, Zirabo and Jirani areas of Ashulia also clashed with police when they took to the streets to press for their demand.

Ashulia Police Station OC Tariqul Islam said the situation returned to normal after noon, reports UNB.
