Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged residents of Dhaka to play an active role in keeping the capital clean, saying maintaining cleanliness is a shared responsibility between city authorities and citizens.

Speaking at a programme in Jurain, Jatrabari, where food and clothing were distributed among underprivileged people to mark the 45th death anniversary of former president Ziaur Rahman, the prime minister called on people to dispose of waste properly and avoid littering public spaces.

He said sanitation workers had already removed a large portion of sacrificial waste across the city following Eid, though cleanup work was still ongoing in some areas. Referring to his inspection of waste management activities, he praised conservancy staff for working under difficult conditions and stressed the need for public cooperation.

Tarique Rahman said clean neighbourhoods improve the quality of life for residents and encouraged citizens to take pride in maintaining their surroundings. He noted that while many admire the cleanliness of cities abroad, such environments are achieved through joint efforts by both local authorities and responsible citizens.

He warned that even small amounts of litter, when discarded carelessly by many people, can quickly accumulate into a major problem. Proper waste disposal, he said, would significantly ease the burden on sanitation workers and help create a healthier urban environment.

The prime minister also said improving the country does not depend solely on government officials or elected representatives, stressing that every citizen has a role to play in building a better Bangladesh.

Several senior government and political figures attended the event.
