President Mohammed Shahabuddin has summoned the second session, or budget session, of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad on June 7 at 3:00pm.
The session will be held at the Parliament complex in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, under Article 72(1) of the Constitution of Bangladesh. The announcement was issued through an official notification signed by Parliament Secretariat Secretary Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan.
The upcoming sitting is considered highly significant as the government is expected to place and pass the national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year during the session. Lawmakers are also likely to discuss key economic priorities, development plans, public spending, inflation control measures, and reforms in major sectors.
The Parliament Secretariat described the upcoming sitting as the 2026 budget session, marking the first full budget to be placed before the newly elected parliament following the political transition earlier this year.
The first session of the 13th Parliament concluded on April 30 after 25 working days. During that session, lawmakers passed 94 bills and introduced 133 ordinances. Seven parliamentary committees were also formed to oversee different ministries and state affairs.
A total of 280 members took part in discussions on the President’s address, reflecting active participation from both treasury and opposition benches during the opening session of the new parliament.
The country’s previous budget session before the political transition ended on July 3, 2024, when the then parliament approved the national budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Shortly afterward, the political landscape changed dramatically following a mass uprising led by students and citizens that resulted in the fall of the Awami League government headed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
An interim administration later initiated a series of reforms before holding parliamentary elections on February 12. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a sweeping majority in the polls and subsequently formed the government.
Newly elected members of parliament took oath on February 17, formally beginning the journey of the 13th Parliament under the new political arrangement.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin had earlier exercised his constitutional authority on February 23 to convene the parliament, after which the Parliament Secretariat officially published the session schedule.
Political observers believe the upcoming budget session will be closely watched as the government faces the challenge of addressing inflation, boosting investment, stabilising the economy, and implementing reform commitments made during and after the election period.
