Prime Minister Tarique Rahman spoke during the JS session today.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said the government will provide support to farmers affected by heavy rainfall for the next three months.

He made the announcement in parliament while responding to a question from a lawmaker representing Sunamganj, as concerns grow over widespread crop damage in haor regions.

The lawmaker highlighted the deteriorating situation in low-lying wetlands, particularly in Sunamganj, where continuous downpours have submerged vast areas of farmland. He said farmers are struggling to harvest their paddy amid rising water levels and urged immediate government intervention.

In response, the Prime Minister said local administrations in several haor districts had already been instructed to prepare in advance based on weather forecasts. He added that authorities were asked to take necessary measures to minimise potential damage.

Describing the situation as distressing, he said he had also spoken with the disaster management authorities earlier in the day and directed them to assess the impact in affected districts, including parts of Mymensingh.

The Prime Minister said the government will identify farmers who have suffered crop losses and ensure they receive financial and logistical support over the next three months.

He expressed hope that timely assistance would help affected farmers recover from the damage and continue agricultural activities in the coming season.
