The Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) on Tuesday signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Italian defence firm Leonardo S.p.A. to procure Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role combat aircraft, a major step in modernising the country’s air capabilities.

The development was confirmed by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate.

Produced by a consortium of the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain, the Typhoon is a fourth-generation fighter jet with exceptional speed, giving it an edge over US-made fifth-generation F-35 jets in dogfights.

The LOI ceremony took place at Air Force Headquarters, attended by Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan and the Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh, Antonio Alessandro.

Under the agreement, Leonardo S.p.A. will supply Eurofighter Typhoon jets to be integrated into the BAF’s modern multi-role combat fleet for frontline operational duties.

Senior officials from the Armed Forces Division and Italian representatives were also present at the signing event.
