170 Bangladeshis repatriated from Libya today
A total of 170 Bangladeshi nationals seeking to return from Libya were repatriated this morning with support from the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), facilitated by the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli and relevant ministries in Dhaka.
The returnees arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 6:10am on a chartered Buraq Air flight, said a foreign ministry’s press release here.
Most had reportedly entered Libya irregularly with the intention of attempting to reach Europe by sea after being influenced or lured by human traffickers.
Several among them alleged that they had been abducted or subjected to physical abuse at different times during their stay in Libya.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and IOM received them at the airport.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs encouraged the returnees to share their experiences to help raise awareness about the dangers of irregular migration.
IOM provided each returnee with travel allowances, food supplies and basic medical support upon arrival.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, efforts are continuing together with the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and IOM to secure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals still held in various detention centres in Libya, reports BSS.
