The number of Bangladeshi nationals arriving in Italy by crossing the Mediterranean Sea more than doubled in the first two months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

A total of 2,589 Bangladeshis reached Italian shores in January and February, up from 1,206 during the same period in 2024. Of these, 1,383 arrived in February alone. All Bangladeshi migrants reportedly departed from Libya.

With these figures, Bangladesh ranked as the top nationality arriving in Italy by sea in early 2025, followed by Pakistan (1,201), Syria (659), Egypt (650), and Eritrea (294).

Overall, 6,808 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy via the Mediterranean during the two months, marking a 49% increase from 4,559 in the same period last year.

According to UNHCR’s February “Italy Sea Arrivals Dashboard,” Libya was the main departure point, accounting for 93% of arrivals. Other embarkation countries included Tunisia (3%), Algeria (2%), and Türkiye (2%).

Bangladeshis represented 42% of all sea arrivals in February, followed by Pakistanis (12%), Egyptians (11%), Syrians (6%), and Eritreans (5%).

Demographic data showed that 81% of arrivals were adult males, 11% were unaccompanied minors, 4% adult females, and 3% accompanied children.

In February alone, 3,329 people reached Italy by sea, with most disembarking in Sicily, followed by Calabria, Tuscany, Sardinia, Lazio, and Campania.
