Twenty Bangladeshi youths, who had been incarcerated in Myanmar for several months, were repatriated today and are en route to Chattogram aboard a Bangladesh Navy ship from the MITT Port in Yangon.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Myanmar law enforcement agencies detained the individuals for illegal trespassing while they were being trafficked to Malaysia by unscrupulous agents.

"Following extensive negotiations with the relevant Myanmar authorities and the verification of their Bangladeshi nationality, the Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar facilitated today's repatriation," the statement said.

The same naval vessel is also carrying home the 55-member Search and Rescue (SAR) and medical team from Bangladesh, who had been deployed in Myanmar for 10 days to provide humanitarian aid following a recent earthquake.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar, Dr. M Monwar Hossain, was present at the port during the formal handover of the 20 youths. He commended the SAR team for their efforts, stating that their humanitarian work significantly enhanced Bangladesh’s image in Myanmar.

Dr. Hossain also urged citizens to exercise caution when seeking employment abroad and warned against falling victim to deceptive job offers and human trafficking networks.

Over the past two years, the Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar has successfully repatriated 352 nationals. The last repatriation took place on September 28, 2024, when 85 Bangladeshis were brought home.

Officers from the embassy were also present at the port to coordinate the return, verify identities, and issue necessary travel documents.

The Bangladesh Navy ship BNS Somudra Avijan, which had arrived in Yangon on Friday carrying 120 metric tons of humanitarian aid, is expected to reach Chattogram by Tuesday afternoon.
