Govt Appoints 86 Deputy AGs, 179 Assistant AGs

The government has cancelled all previous appointments and appointed 86 new Deputy Attorneys General (DAGs) and 179 Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) to the Attorney General’s Office.

The Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division issued separate orders on Thursday announcing the appointments.

The changes come after a series of resignations from the Attorney General’s Office following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, 2024.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Md Asaduzzaman was appointed Attorney General on August 8, 2024. He is currently serving as the Law Minister.

Five days later, on August 13, the government appointed Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan, Anek R. Haque and Mohammad Arshadur Rouf as Additional Attorneys General.

On August 28, the interim government appointed 66 Deputy Attorneys General and 161 Assistant Attorneys General.

Later, on June 23, following the 13th parliamentary election, 18 law officers from the Attorney General’s Office resigned, reportedly identifying themselves as supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami. The group included seven Deputy Attorneys General and 11 Assistant Attorneys General.

In a joint statement, they said they resigned in protest against the failure to implement the July Charter, the government’s opposition to establishing a separate secretariat for the judiciary and the cancellation of an ordinance concerning the appointment of Supreme Court judges.

The latest appointments bring a new team of law officers to the Attorney General’s Office.
