The government has issued show-cause notices to 28 lower court judges over their social media posts criticising the state of judicial independence in the country.

According to notices sent by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on Tuesday, the judges have been asked to submit written explanations within seven working days.

The notices state that the judges made negative and, in some cases, inflammatory remarks on social media regarding their recruiting and supervising authorities, while also expressing personal opinions on judicial matters.

Authorities said such actions violate existing High Court guidelines governing the use of social media by members of the judiciary.

The conduct has been described as a breach of professional discipline, with officials terming it “misconduct” under applicable rules.

The development comes amid heightened scrutiny over adherence to judicial conduct and the responsible use of digital platforms by public officials.
