Poor Governance Blamed for Regime Changes in South Asia: Doval
India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has attributed recent government changes in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka to “poor governance,” highlighting the critical role of effective leadership in national stability.
Speaking on India’s National Unity Day during the Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture on governance, Doval said governance is the central pillar of nation-building and security.
“The rise and fall of empires, monarchies, or democracies is ultimately a history of their governance,” he said. “Recent regime changes in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, through non-constitutional means, were rooted in poor governance.”
Doval emphasized that accountable governance is essential not only for political stability but also for securing national interests and achieving long-term goals.
He also drew lessons from history, noting that empires often collapsed due to internal decay and ineffective leadership, underscoring the importance of strong institutions and competent administration.
