The United Kingdom, Australia and Canada have formally recognised the state of Palestine defying strong objections from both the United States and Israel.

In a landmark decision, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Sunday that the United Kingdom is officially recognizing a Palestinian state.

The declaration, though largely symbolic, is seen as historically significant, especially considering Britain’s past role in shaping the modern Middle East. The announcement follows similar moves by Canada and Australia and comes amid renewed international momentum toward recognizing Palestinian statehood.

Starmer said the decision aims to “revive hope for peace between Palestinians and Israelis,” signaling a shift in policy amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

The announcement was expected, following Starmer’s earlier pledge in July that the UK would recognize Palestine unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire, allowed humanitarian aid access, and made concrete moves toward long-term peace.

Besides, Canada has officially recognized a Palestinian state, joining a growing number of countries backing a two-state solution, even as the move draws criticism from the United States and Israel.

Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on Sunday via social media platform X, affirming Canada's recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Carney had previously indicated in late July that Canada would take this step, citing frustration over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and a desire to support a peaceful resolution.

The decision comes just days before the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York, where several other countries — including Australia and France — are expected to follow suit. The United Kingdom and Portugal are also likely to announce recognition later on Sunday.

The move has sparked strong opposition from both Israel and the United States, who argue that such recognition rewards Hamas and encourages further extremism. Hamas led the deadly attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the current war.

Despite the backlash, Canada and its allies hope this symbolic gesture will build momentum toward a negotiated peace and reinforce international support for a two-state solution, reports UNB.

Besides, Australia says it is formally recognizing Palestinian statehood.
