Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, warned on Wednesday that the country has received credible intelligence indicating a possible Indian military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours.

The warning follows heightened tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours after an attack last week in Indian-administered Kashmir that left 26 people dead. India has accused Pakistani elements of involvement, a claim Pakistan has firmly rejected while calling for an impartial international investigation.

In a statement shared on social media, Tarar said: “Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends to launch a military strike using the Pahalgam incident as a false pretext. Any act of aggression will be met with a decisive response. India will bear full responsibility for the consequences.”

In response to the escalating rhetoric, both countries have initiated retaliatory measures. India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, while Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian aircraft.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to track down and punish the perpetrators of the Kashmir attack, further raising concerns over potential military escalation.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif also stated that a military incursion by India was imminent. While emphasising that Pakistan is on high alert, he noted that nuclear weapons would only be used in the event of a direct threat to the country’s existence.

Kashmir remains a core point of contention between the two nations. Claimed in full by both but divided in control, the disputed Himalayan region has been the flashpoint for several wars and frequent skirmishes.
