Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector has marked a new milestone in sustainable manufacturing as two additional factories have received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

With these new certifications, the total number of LEED-accredited garment factories in Bangladesh has risen to 275, strengthening the country’s position as a global leader in eco-friendly production.

The newly certified factories, both in Gazipur, demonstrated strong performance in environmental safety and resource efficiency:

MNR Sweaters Ltd, in Braidachala, Sreepur, earned the top Platinum rating with a score of 85 under the ‘Existing Building’ category.

Fashion Floor BD Ltd, in Godarchala, Telihati, secured a Gold certification with a score of 71 under the ‘New Construction’ category.

According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), of the 275 certified factories, 116 hold Platinum ratings and 140 are Gold-certified. Bangladesh now hosts 70 of the world’s 100 highest-rated green garment factories.

Industry experts attribute this achievement to advanced measures in energy efficiency, water management, and waste reduction.

Mohiuddin Rubel, former BGMEA Director and Additional Managing Director of Denim Expert Ltd, said the continuing streak of LEED certifications keeps Bangladesh’s RMG sector competitive in global markets.

Experts added that this focus on sustainable industrialisation will help boost future exports and position Bangladesh as a responsible long-term supplier in the international fashion supply chain.
