China Donates 19,000 Kits to Boost Bangladesh’s Dengue Fight

Up to 15 June this year, a total of 5,988 people have been hospitalised with dengue and 30 have died.

China has donated 19,000 dengue combo test kits to Bangladesh to aid in the ongoing battle against the mosquito-borne disease.

The kits can simultaneously detect NS1, IgG, and IgM markers—helping doctors determine whether the infection is active, recent, or a secondary one.

The handover ceremony was held on 3 July at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Mohakhali, Dhaka. DGHS Director General Prof Dr Md Abu Jafor presided over the event, attended by Chinese Chargé d'Affaires Dr Liu Yuyin.

Speaking as the chief guest, Prof Dr Md Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the chief adviser on health, said the DGHS is actively deploying doctors, ambulances, and test kits to dengue-prone areas.

He stated that while the dengue situation remains under control, preparedness is key. “Mugda Hospital is ready, but if the number of patients increases, it could become difficult. Following health guidelines will make patient management easier,” he said.

Dr Rahman also raised concern about other circulating viruses, including chikungunya and influenza. “Many people are dismissing symptoms and staying home, which delays treatment. Any signs of illness should prompt testing and consultation,” he said.

He expressed optimism about the future of Bangladesh–China health cooperation, noting ongoing discussions on large-scale hospital projects, medical equipment development, vaccine production, and robotic healthcare technology.

Dr Liu Yuyin reiterated China’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Bangladesh’s health sector.

Meanwhile, DGHS reported one new dengue-related death in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll this year to 45. A total of 358 new dengue patients were hospitalised during the same period.
