Lionel Messi scored once again as Argentina wrapped up the World Cup group stage in style with a 3-1 victory over Jordan on Saturday, heading into the knockout rounds with perfect momentum.

The Argentine captain came off the bench to score his sixth goal of the tournament, extending his lead at the top of the scoring charts as the competition moves into the last 32.

Argentina finished top of Group J with a perfect nine points after winning all three group matches. They had earlier defeated Algeria 3-0 and Austria 2-0, with Messi playing a decisive role throughout.

The defending champions will now face Cape Verde in the last 32 in Miami on July 3.

With qualification already secured, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni heavily rotated his squad, making nine changes to the starting lineup. Only goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and striker Lautaro Martinez retained their places from the previous match.

Despite the changes, Argentina dominated from the opening whistle in front of a packed crowd in Texas.

Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a superb free-kick that left Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila with no chance.

Argentina doubled their lead before halftime when Lautaro Martinez converted from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed a foul inside the box.

Jordan, already eliminated from the tournament, pulled one back shortly after the break through Mousa Al-Tamari, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

The crowd then erupted as Messi entered the match just after the hour mark.

The 39-year-old received a thunderous welcome and made an immediate impact.

With 10 minutes remaining, Messi sealed the victory with a well-taken free-kick to put the result beyond doubt and maintain his outstanding scoring form.

Argentina now head into the knockout stage full of confidence as they continue their pursuit of back-to-back World Cup titles.

With Messi in inspired form and the squad showing strong depth, Argentina remain among the leading contenders to lift the trophy once again.
