Patuakhali: A black poa fish weighing about 8 kg was caught in a fisherman's net in the sea near Kuakata in Patuakhali. This fish is also known locally as 'Lambu Poa' or 'black poa'. The fish was sold at an auction at Alipur Fisheries Port on Sunday morning for 50 thousand taka.

It is learnt that Rahim Majhi went fishing in the sea near the Kuakata coast on Saturday night (July 4). After lifting the net, the valuable black poa fish was found trapped in the net along with other fish.

When the black poa fish was brought to Alipur Fisheries Port on Sunday, Kuakata Fresh Fish owner Musa bought it at an open auction. The fish was sold at a price of 2.5 lakh taka per maund, for a total of 50 thousand taka.

Fisherman Rahim Majhi said, there was a shortage of fish in the sea. Meanwhile, low pressure has started in the Sea. I did not expect to get such a valuable fish by taking the risk of going to the sea and casting a net. I am thanking God.

Buyer Musa said that he buys various types of marine fish and exports them outside the country besides Dhaka. Since the swim bladder (fish pillow) of the black poa is very valuable, the market price of this fish is also very high.

Kalapara Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Apu Saha said, this fish is locally known as black poa or lambu poa. Its weight can usually be from 4 to 40 kg. Many people call it the 'black gold of the sea' because it is valuable. It is undoubtedly good news that such a valuable fish has been caught in the nets of fishermen after the 58-day ban. - Gofran Palash
