Mahalaya, an auspicious occasion heralding the arrival of Goddess Durga, is being observed by members of the Hindu community across Bangladesh today (Saturday) through religious rituals, prayers and special programmes.

Mahalaya marks the end of Pitru Paksha, the fortnight dedicated to honouring departed ancestors, and the beginning of Devi Paksha, the auspicious period leading up to Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community.

The occasion is traditionally observed through the recitation of Chandi Path, devotional songs and prayers. Devotees also perform tarpan, offering water in remembrance of their departed ancestors and praying for the peace of their souls.

In Dhaka, special programmes are being held at Dhakeshwari National Temple and other temples across the capital and elsewhere in the country.

Mahalaya marks the beginning of the countdown to Durga Puja, which is scheduled to begin on October 16 with Maha Shashthi and conclude on October 21 with Bijoya Dashami, when the idols of Goddess Durga will be immersed.

The occasion holds deep religious and cultural significance for Hindus, symbolising the arrival of Goddess Durga on Earth from her heavenly abode at Mount Kailash.
