Dhaka, Nov 20 -The national gas grid is set to receive an additional supply of approximately 5 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of natural gas, following the successful completion of a workover operation at the Kailashtila Gas Field in Sylhet.
Petrobangla, the state-owned oil and gas corporation, confirmed the news on Thursday (November 20), stating that the new gas supply is expected to be added to the grid within the next three days.
The workover (re-drilling/rehabilitation) of Kailashtila Well No. 1, under the supervision of Sylhet Gas Field Limited (SGFL), was successfully completed, revealing new gas reserves.
Supply Details: The well is expected to contribute approximately 5 MMCFD of gas to the national grid daily.
Workover Effort: The workover operation on the previously shut down well began on August 12 this year, utilizing BAPEX’s (Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited) rig Bijoy-12.
The discovery is part of Petrobangla’s broader initiative to revitalize old wells. The corporation noted that workover operations are currently ongoing at 14 wells within the Sylhet Gas Field.
Of these, the workover on seven wells, including Kailashtila Well No. 1, has already been completed, with gas reserves successfully discovered in all of them.
Kailashtila Well No. 1 initially began production in 1961 and was shut down in 2019 after its reserves were seemingly depleted. The current workover operation marks a successful effort to access new, deeper layers of gas within the old well.
Presently, the Kailashtila Gas Field's Wells 2, 6, 7, and 8 are collectively supplying 46 MMCFD of gas to the national grid. The addition of the newly rehabilitated Well No. 1 will further boost the country’s domestic gas supply. - UNB
