PM Assures Factories of Improved Gas, Power Supply From Tuesday

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has assured businesses that gas and electricity supplies to factories will return to their previous levels from Tuesday night, according to FBCCI Administrator Md Fazlul Haque.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the prime minister on Monday, Fazlul Haque said the current supply crisis was expected to begin easing from Tuesday night.

“The prime minister said, Inshallah, from tomorrow night we will be able to return to the previous level of gas and electricity supply before the new crisis emerged,” he said.

He described the assurance as the biggest relief to emerge from the three-hour meeting, which was attended by representatives of 21 business organisations at the Secretariat.

Asked what was meant by returning to the previous level, Fazlul Haque said it referred to the situation before the crisis intensified in August.

A few days earlier, the prime minister’s Economic and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir had said gas supplies would return to normal within a few days through government measures and imports from alternative sources.

Gas pressure has remained low for several days in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and other areas, severely disrupting industrial production and causing difficulties for households, hotels and restaurants.

Many businesses have been forced to rely on alternative fuels, raising operating costs and creating additional challenges. Long queues have also formed outside CNG filling stations amid the gas shortage.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had earlier said the government was working to resolve the crisis and expected a solution within one to one-and-a-half weeks.
