EC registers 284 postal voters for Thakurgaon byelection

The Election Commission (EC) has registered 284 postal voters, 29 being expatriate Bangladeshis, as the process is underway to stage byelection on October 29 in a Thakurgain constituency.


The seat fell vacant with election of previously elected lawmaker Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as President of the country.

“Of the 284 voters registered for postal balloting, 29 are expatriate voters and rests are 255 are government officials and employees working in different parts of the country and people engaged in election duties,” an EC spokesman said.

His comments came as the deadline for appealing against the returning officer’s decision over the bypolls is set to expire tomorrow with no issue appeared so far to challenge it as all six candidates were declared fit to vie in the fray.

According to the election schedule appeals are to be disposed of on October 6, while deadline for withdrawing candidacies is October 7 and the EC is set to allocate electoral symbols among candidates on the very next day.
Voting in the Thakurgaon-1 constituency will be held on Oct 29 from 8am to 4pm without any break.

District Election Officer and Returning Officer Md Kamrul Islam published the list of validly of the nominated candidates on September 29.

The candidates are - BNP-nominee Obaidullah Masud and Mirza Foysal Amin, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Delwar Hossain, Bangladesh Khilafat Andolan’s Md Abdul Alim Nizami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Md Khademul Islam and Bangladesh Congress candidate Hossain Muhammad Omar Faruk.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed earlier said 5,07,203 voters were registered in the constituency during the 13th parliamentary election held on Feb 12 and with enrolment of new ones the figure now stood at 5,15,525.

Incumbent President Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected from the constituency in the February 12 general election, reports BSS.
