A delegation of the National Citizen Party (NCP) met the visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission team in Dhaka on Thursday to discuss Bangladesh’s macroeconomic challenges, governance reforms and the ongoing political transition.

In a statement, the NCP delegation thanked the IMF for what it described as continued support during a critical period and for outlining a reform roadmap aimed at stabilising the economy. The party said the proposed measures were essential for ensuring sustainable and long-term development.

During the meeting, the IMF team highlighted several areas of concern, including slowing GDP growth, weak revenue mobilisation, a persistently low revenue-to-GDP ratio, rising distressed assets in the banking sector and increasing youth unemployment.

The NCP representatives acknowledged these vulnerabilities and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing revenue digitalisation and supporting ongoing financial-sector reforms. They also discussed what they termed the kleptocratic practices of the previous regime, noting their impact on governance and the need for structural safeguards to prevent future corruption.

Other priorities raised included reducing the size of the informal economy, promoting greater transparency, and ensuring a smooth transition from the interim administration to an elected government.

Both sides expressed optimism about building a more resilient economy grounded in good governance and the hard-working people of Bangladesh, the statement added.

The IMF delegation was led by mission chief Chris Papageorgiou, along with resident representative Maksym Kryshko and economic analyst Tawhid Ilahi. The NCP team included Joint Convener Javed Rasin, Foreign Affairs Cell lead Sultan Mohammed Zakaria, Joint Member Secretary Alauddin Mohammad and Joint Chief Coordinator Md Abdullah Al Faisal.
