Impact of US Tariffs Manageable for Bangladesh: Salehuddin
Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed expressed confidence that the recent tariffs imposed by the United States will not pose significant challenges to Bangladesh's economy.
"The government has already taken the necessary steps to engage with US authorities regarding the new tariffs. We believe that the impact will be manageable, and we remain hopeful that it will lead to positive outcomes," he stated during a conversation with journalists at the Secretariat on the first working day after the Eid holidays.
Currently, Bangladeshi goods face an average tariff of 15% in the US, but on April 2, the Trump administration announced an additional 37% tariff. Despite this, Salehuddin reassured the public, emphasizing that the country's economy has the resilience to cope with such changes.
In addition, the adviser highlighted the stability of commodity prices during the Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr period, which brought relief to consumers. "This Eid, people experienced a good celebration, with prices remaining stable," he said.
He also pointed to the positive trend in remittances, noting that Bangladesh received $3 billion in March alone, which helped strengthen the country’s foreign exchange reserves. "The nation's economic outlook is improving, and our reserves have also seen an increase," Salehuddin concluded.
