The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched a master plan to fully digitize its operations, aiming to ensure digital services reach taxpayers more efficiently.

NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan confirmed on Sunday that all NBR activities will eventually be carried out via digital platforms. “We are working on a comprehensive master plan and corresponding projects to achieve full digitization,” he said at a workshop on the e-Return system, held at the Revenue Building's multipurpose conference room.

The workshop, chaired by NBR Member Abu Hannan Delwar Hossain, focused on identifying and addressing issues with the e-Return system. Special guest GM Abul Kalam Kaikobad, NBR Member (Tax Administration and Human Resource Management), also attended.

Khan announced that from July 1, taxpayers will be able to submit their income tax returns online. He assured that all data will be securely stored and eventually migrated to a cloud-based system, eliminating potential storage issues.

He also shared plans for mandatory online corporate return submissions from the next fiscal year. “We aim to make online income tax filing compulsory, with some exceptions,” Khan added.

The NBR is working to automate the audit selection process using artificial intelligence, removing human biases and ensuring objective, data-driven decisions. This system will also reduce errors in tax calculations, with accountability shifted to the NBR’s digital system.

Since September 9, 2023, the NBR has made the online return filing system available, allowing taxpayers to easily submit, print, and download their returns and certificates via the website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd. Tax payments and adjustments are also facilitated through internet banking, card payments, and mobile banking.

The system has been well-received, with over 14.96 lakh taxpayers filing their returns online and more than 18.90 lakh registering for e-returns this year.

The NBR hopes to resolve any existing issues to make online filing mandatory for all taxpayers in the coming tax year. Currently, the system is optional but has been made compulsory for government employees in Dhaka North, Dhaka South, Gazipur, and Narayanganj City Corporation, as well as employees in specific private sectors, including scheduled banks, telecom providers, and multinational companies like Unilever, BAT, Marico, Berger Paints, Bata, and Nestlé Bangladesh.
