Dengue Deaths Hit Record High as 9 Die in 24 Hours

Nine people died of dengue across Bangladesh in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning, the highest single-day death toll recorded so far this year, as the country continues to see a sharp rise in infections.

The deaths were reported between 8am Monday and 8am Tuesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

During the same period, 1,571 new dengue patients were hospitalised, taking the total number of hospitalisations this year to 45,475. So far, 42,127 patients have recovered and been discharged, while 3,218 remain hospitalised, according to DGHS data.

The latest fatalities have raised the dengue death toll in Bangladesh to 130 this year.

August recorded 43 deaths, while 33 people have died of dengue so far in September. Earlier, two deaths were reported in January, two in February, one in May, 13 in June and 36 in July.

Dhaka continued to account for a significant share of new hospitalisations. During the latest 24-hour period, 196 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation, 134 in Dhaka South City Corporation and 408 outside the two city corporations in Dhaka.

Among other divisions, 242 patients were hospitalised in Khulna, 177 in Chattogram, 142 in Barishal, 116 in Rajshahi, 77 in Mymensingh, 71 in Rangpur and eight in Sylhet.

The surge comes as Bangladesh's dengue outbreak has accelerated sharply in recent weeks, putting increasing pressure on hospitals. Reuters reported Monday that the rising caseload was already straining the country's healthcare system, with experts warning that September could bring a further increase in infections.

The latest figures underscore the worsening dengue situation as the country enters a critical period of the annual outbreak season.
