9 more die of measles, similar symptoms in 24 hours

Nine children have died from measles and symptoms consistent with the highly contagious but preventable disease in the country in the last 24 hours till 8:00am on Tuesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).


Of the new deaths, three were confirmed as measles-related, while the remaining six were classified as suspected.

With this, the total number of confirmed deaths from measles has risen to 47 and suspected deaths to 226 since March 15.

According to the DGHS data, a total of 1,276 suspected measles cases were recorded in the past 24 hours. Since March 15, the total number of suspected cases has risen to 34,662.

During the 24-hour period, 163 new confirmed measles cases were reported, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 4,856, reports UNB.

A total of 23,348 suspected measles patients have been hospitalised since March 15 and 19,991 of them have recovered and been released.
