More than 1,000 people have been killed in a massive landslide in Sudan’s western Darfur region, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), which controls the affected area.
The disaster struck on Sunday in the village of Tarasin, located in the Marra Mountains, after several days of heavy rainfall. The landslide reportedly flattened the entire village, leaving only one survivor.
“Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand individuals, with only one survivor,” the SLM/A said in a statement, calling the event “massive and devastating.”
The landslide also destroyed much of the region’s citrus farms, a key source of livelihood for local communities.
The group has appealed to the United Nations and humanitarian organisations for help in recovering bodies and delivering urgent aid.
Sudan is already reeling from a civil war now in its third year, which has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Famine has been declared in parts of Darfur, while fighting has escalated around El-Fasher following the army’s takeover of Khartoum in March.
