Glacier collapse likely caused Nepal-Tibet flood, scientists say

The death toll in Nepal following Wednesday's devastating flash flood has risen to at least 300. Rescue efforts are underway to find survivors, with more than 800 people missing in Nepal. 

In Tibet, at least 558 people are unaccounted for and three are confirmed dead - it's unclear if these figures overlap with Nepal's. Hundreds of tourists are among the missing, with many believed to have been undergoing a sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. 

Scientists believe the flood was likely caused by a glacier collapsing, highlighting the issue of rapidly melting Himalayan ice. There are fears that further flash flooding could be caused by debris that was washed into the river. – BBC briefing
