Two fishermen killed in Sylhet lightning strike

Two fishermen were killed and another went missing after a lightning strike hit a fishing boat in haor area of Fenchuganj upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon.


The incident occurred near Baghmara Purba Katutila area of the upazila at noon.

The deceased were identified as Sabir Ali, 40, and Hamid Mia, 45, both residents of Kamalpur village under Kalarbazar area in Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar district.

According to police and local sources, the three fishermen went to catch fish in Baghmara Purba Katutila area adjacent to the Juri River in a boat earlier in the morning. A sudden lightning strike hit the area, killing Sabir Ali and Hamid Mia on the spot.

During the incident, the third fisherman reportedly fell into the water and remains missing, reports BSS.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fenchuganj Police Station Abu Jafar Mahfuzul Karim said that police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene after receiving the information. A search operation is underway in the haor to locate the missing fisherman.
