Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam on Tuesday urged Romania to resume labour recruitment from Bangladesh and explore avenues for deeper engagement in key sectors.
He made the call during a courtesy meeting with Sena Latif, the non-resident Ambassador of Romania to Bangladesh, at his office. The Foreign Secretary congratulated the Ambassador on the presentation of her credentials and welcomed her to Bangladesh.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the current state of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation.
The Foreign Secretary proposed enhanced collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, labour mobility, education, and consular services. He also highlighted opportunities for trade diversification and investment, particularly in the ICT, renewable energy, and agro-processing sectors.
Emphasising educational cooperation, he suggested joint scholarships, mutual recognition of academic degrees, and university-level exchanges between the two countries.
The Ambassador appreciated the proposals and assured that she would convey them to the Romanian authorities. She also noted the importance of facilitating visa services for Bangladeshi students and workers and expressed interest in exploring interim consular arrangements to support this.
The Romanian side also expressed willingness to explore alternative visa mechanisms and reaffirmed its support for Bangladesh’s continued access to the GSP+ scheme.
The Foreign Secretary assured the Ambassador of the full support of the Government of Bangladesh during her tenure in advancing bilateral ties.
