Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has said there are currently no conditions for restoring the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but emphasized the need to intensify diplomatic efforts.

Speaking to the Russian newspaper Izvestia ahead of US President Donald Trump's claim that Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire, Ryabkov expressed doubt over the deal’s revival.

“At the moment, I do not see conditions for restoring the [Iran deal],” Ryabkov told Izvestia. “But this does not mean abandoning diplomacy. On the contrary, now is the time to redouble efforts to reach decisions that could help stabilize the situation.”

The Russian diplomat added that Moscow understands “the logic and argumentation of our friends in Tehran,” stressing that “this of course means ending the strikes and halting any further escalation by the other side.”

He also noted that a cessation of attacks is a “clear pre-condition” for Iranian authorities to consider political and diplomatic options.

The 2015 nuclear deal aimed to restrict Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for lifting international sanctions. However, the agreement unraveled after Trump withdrew the US from the pact in 2018, despite renewed negotiations earlier this year. Tehran cancelled the latest round of talks following Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory, reports UNB.
