UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declined a meeting request from Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, who is currently visiting London to seek international support for recovering billions of dollars allegedly embezzled by the previous Sheikh Hasina administration.

Yunus stated that the UK has a moral responsibility to assist Bangladesh in tracing and recovering the funds, which he claims were illicitly transferred abroad, including to the UK.

Despite efforts to arrange a meeting, Yunus confirmed that no direct communication has taken place with Starmer. “I have no direct conversation with him,” he said, though he expressed confidence that the UK would ultimately support the initiative.

Earlier, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam faced public criticism after claiming that a meeting could not be arranged because Starmer was not in the country—a statement widely challenged on social media.

Yunus emphasized that his efforts are focused solely on the recovery of funds allegedly stolen from Bangladesh’s public resources.

UK government sources indicated that no meeting is currently planned between Starmer and Yunus.
