The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka on Monday commemorated the National Day of Algerian Students, paying solemn tribute to the patriotism, courage, and sacrifice of student activists who played a crucial role in Algeria’s struggle for independence.

The commemorative programme, held at the Embassy premises in Baridhara, included the hoisting of the Algerian national flag, playing of the national anthem, and screening of a documentary highlighting Algeria’s fight for liberation and the nation’s post-independence achievements.

The day marks the historic student mobilisation of 19 May 1956, when the General Union of Algerian Muslim Students (UGEMA) called upon students in Algeria and abroad—including those in secondary education—to suspend their studies and join the national liberation movement. This decisive act of solidarity broadened the scope of the independence struggle and significantly strengthened the National Liberation Army (NLA).

Addressing the event, Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab SAIDANI paid glowing tribute to the students of 1956. “Today, we honour that generation of students whose commitment proved that true patriotism lies not in privilege, but in purpose,” he said.

He noted that the student movement was more than a protest—it was a patriotic stand that sent a clear message to the colonial authorities and the world: the Algerian people were united in their quest for freedom.

Ambassador Saidani also highlighted Algeria’s progress since independence, particularly in education. “Literacy rates have seen a significant rise, and our higher education sector has expanded across the country,” he said.

Calling for greater academic collaboration between Algeria and Bangladesh, the ambassador said, “Drawing inspiration from this movement will encourage students to contribute meaningfully to the development of both countries. We aim to strengthen bilateral cooperation through inter-university partnerships, student exchanges, and academic initiatives.”

The event was attended by distinguished guests, senior journalists, religious leaders, students, and Embassy officials, reflecting the spirit of solidarity and shared values between Algeria and Bangladesh.
