Xi Praises Taste of Bangladeshi Mangoes, Jackfruits
Mangoes and jackfruits from Bangladesh, known for their rich flavors and high quality, have won admiration from none other than Chinese President Xi Jinping. During a meeting with Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Friday, President Xi shared his appreciation for the exceptional taste of these fruits.
According to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, President Xi expressed his fondness for Bangladeshi mangoes and jackfruits, which he had tasted previously. Xi’s endorsement holds significant weight and is expected to boost Bangladesh’s efforts to export these fruits to China.
“This acknowledgment from President Xi Jinping opens a promising avenue for the export of mangoes and jackfruits to China, with shipments expected to begin in the upcoming season, around May to August,” Alam said.
In addition to mangoes and jackfruits, China has shown interest in importing guavas from Bangladesh. This follows a previous meeting in Dhaka where Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen highlighted China’s eagerness to import these fruits. The discussions between Bangladesh and China are paving the way for a new chapter in trade relations, particularly in the fruit export sector.
Alam noted that, with this new development, Bangladesh stands to significantly increase the export of its mangoes and jackfruits to China in the near future. He emphasized that maintaining high-quality standards for the fruits will be crucial. To support this, the World Food Programme (WFP) will provide $4 million and technical assistance to help ensure the export quality of Bangladeshi produce.
The agreement promises to create large-scale export opportunities, with a particular focus on mangoes, which have long been a favorite of the Chinese people.
