No Response from India on Yunus-Modi Meeting in Bangkok
Bangladesh's request for a meeting between Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the upcoming BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok has yet to receive a response from India.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain confirmed on Sunday that Dhaka has not heard back from Delhi regarding the proposed meeting. "No, there has been no response," he said when asked by reporters about India's stance on the matter.
On March 21, Bangladesh reached out through diplomatic channels to arrange the meeting, which would take place on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit, scheduled for April 2-4 in Bangkok. However, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has not provided any updates on the possibility of a bilateral meeting. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated at a press briefing that no new information was available, adding that Bangladesh-India relations cover a wide range of areas, including development, economic cooperation, and connectivity.
Dr. Yunus is set to attend the summit, where Thailand will assume the chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). Bangladesh will take over as chair of BIMSTEC during the summit, which includes seven countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Dr. Yunus recently expressed confidence in the strength of Bangladesh-India relations, describing them as intertwined and emphasizing that both nations work closely for mutual benefit. He also dismissed any negative rumors, stressing the importance of maintaining a positive and productive relationship.
