Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of the ERD, signed on behalf of Bangladesh, while Sudhir Muralidharan, Country Manager of UNOPS Bangladesh, represented the UN agency. The event was attended by senior officials from the Bangladesh Army, Armed Forces Division (AFD), BIPSOT, ERD, the Elsie Initiative Fund for Uniformed Women in Peace Operations (EIF), and UNOPS.
The ERD Secretary emphasized the importance of gender equity and increasing women's involvement in UN peacekeeping missions, highlighting that this project is a significant step toward achieving those goals. “This project strengthens Bangladesh’s commitment to global peace and security,” he said.
Muralidharan added that the project will include the construction of a dedicated accommodation facility for female peacekeepers undergoing pre-deployment training, ensuring they are properly housed throughout their training.
The "Enhancement of the Capacity of BIPSOT to Train Female Peacekeepers" project, funded by the Elsie Initiative Fund and implemented by UNOPS, aims to build a three-story dormitory with necessary facilities for 60 female peacekeepers. This initiative will support gender equality in peacekeeping, align with Bangladesh's global contributions, and reinforce commitments to UNSCR 1325 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality), and SDG 16 (Peace and Justice).
The project will span three years with a total budget of USD 997,336.
