On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed recognition of the people’s aspirations for a future characterized by greater democracy, justice, and prosperity. Speaking at a joint briefing with Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at a city hotel, Guterres emphasized the pivotal moment Bangladesh is experiencing and called for international support for the country’s journey toward a more inclusive and prosperous future.

“This is a critical juncture for Bangladesh, and the international community must play its part in supporting efforts to create a just, inclusive, and prosperous future,” said Guterres.

As the country undergoes significant reforms and transitions, Guterres assured that the UN stands ready to assist in fostering peace, national dialogue, and healing. He further reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to helping Bangladesh build a sustainable and equitable future. "You can count on the UN to be your steadfast partner, working alongside the people of Bangladesh," he stated.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s remarkable generosity, Guterres also commended the nation’s efforts in responding to the Rohingya crisis. He remarked, "As we come together in this sacred month of Ramadan, it is more important than ever to focus on solidarity and shared humanity. We will continue standing with the people of Bangladesh as you navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead."

Guterres noted the immense efforts of the Bangladeshi people, especially those in Cox’s Bazar, who have hosted over a million refugees fleeing violence and persecution. "Bangladesh has demonstrated extraordinary solidarity and human dignity by offering sanctuary to Rohingya refugees, often at significant social, environmental, and economic cost," he added.

He stressed that the international community must not take this generosity for granted. "I will continue to urge the world to take greater responsibility and provide necessary financial and political support for both the refugees and their host communities," Guterres said.

Addressing the dire humanitarian situation in Cox’s Bazar, Guterres warned that planned cuts in financial assistance could lead to a severe crisis. "With the announced cuts, we are at risk of having only 40 percent of the necessary resources in 2025 compared to 2024," he explained. This could result in drastic reductions in food rations and other critical services. "This would be an unmitigated disaster. People will suffer, and people will die. I strongly appeal to the international community to allow us to avoid this tragedy," Guterres added.

The UN Secretary-General reiterated the organization’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis, emphasizing the importance of a safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable return to Myanmar.

On his visit, Guterres also inaugurated the new "UN House in Bangladesh," a symbol of the deepening relationship between the UN and Bangladesh. During his trip, Guterres participated in a roundtable discussion on reforms with political leaders, representatives of the National Consensus Building Commission, and other stakeholders.

He called on all parties in Myanmar to exercise maximum restraint to protect civilians and prevent further violence. "The situation in Myanmar continues to deteriorate. We must prioritize the protection of civilians and create the conditions for democracy to take root," he urged.

Earlier, Guterres met with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to discuss the Rohingya crisis and Bangladesh’s internal reforms. Both sides expressed solidarity, with Guterres reaffirming the UN's support for Bangladesh’s ongoing transition.

This visit also saw discussions with political figures, civil society members, and youth groups, highlighting the UN's commitment to assisting Bangladesh during this transformative period.
