BD Seeks EU Support for Human Resource Development

On Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain emphasized the importance of Bangladesh's longstanding relationship with the European Union (EU) and requested support from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for human capital development, particularly in vocational training. He highlighted that skill development could enhance the contributions of Bangladeshis abroad to both their home and host economies.

During a meeting with EIB Vice President Nicola Beer, who is visiting Bangladesh for the first time, Hossain also called for more efficient and timely disbursement of funds for EIB-financed projects in Bangladesh, in line with prior commitments.

Beer expressed enthusiasm for further collaboration, particularly in infrastructure, water management, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). She reaffirmed the EU's continued support for Bangladesh's Interim Government, especially in institutional and economic reforms and anti-corruption efforts.

Additionally, Beer stressed the importance of regional connectivity for South Asia and the EIB's eagerness to invest in this area. Hossain, in turn, sought assistance in tackling money laundering and recovering stolen assets held abroad by some Bangladeshis. He also underscored the Interim Government’s firm stance against project-related corruption.

Both sides praised Bangladesh's significant progress in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector and agreed to intensify efforts to combat irregular migration.

Beer’s three-day official visit will include key meetings, including one with Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus.
