Trivedi Sees Bangladesh-India Ties Advancing Soon

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Wednesday expressed optimism about the future of Bangladesh-India relations, saying there is no bilateral issue that cannot be resolved through mutual understanding and that ties would move forward constructively once Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visits India.

"I am looking forward to everything positively. We had a great meeting filled with immense positivity," Trivedi told reporters after holding separate meetings with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Responding to a question about two separate invitations extended by India to the Bangladeshi prime minister, Trivedi said the decision rests entirely with the Prime Minister.

"From our end, I can assure you that we are looking forward to welcoming the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to India. We are very hopeful that this visit will take place in the near future," he said.

Asked about pending bilateral issues, including the Teesta and Ganges water-sharing agreements, the Indian envoy said the discussions with Bangladeshi officials were primarily courtesy meetings held in a warm and positive atmosphere.

"However, there is no issue that cannot be sorted out through mutual understanding. Ultimately, it is about people. Whatever is beneficial for both democracies and their citizens will be prioritised," he said.

Trivedi said both countries have active working groups dealing with bilateral issues.

"These working groups will continue their discussions. As I mentioned, there is no problem that cannot be resolved. Once the Prime Minister visits India, things will move forward constructively," he added.

Describing the meetings as highly cordial, the High Commissioner said Bangladesh and India share deep historical, cultural and sporting ties.

"This relationship is truly historical. We share not only our borders but also our history, culture and aspirations," he said.

"I am looking forward to a relationship whose foundation rests on mutual, people-to-people benefits for both nations. This is just the beginning, and I am confident we will continue to deepen our engagement."

Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe and other officials of the Indian High Commission were also present.

Trivedi presented his credentials to the President of Bangladesh on June 25, reaffirming India's commitment to strengthening the multifaceted partnership between the two neighbouring countries.

India has invited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13, where global cooperation, trade and sustainable development will be among the key agenda items.

Earlier, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had received the Indian invitation and forwarded it to the Prime Minister's Office.

She said Bangladesh remains committed to peace and stability in the region and expects all regional partners to work towards resolving outstanding issues through dialogue.
