Pakistan, DU Discuss Expanding Education Cooperation

Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider met Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr A B M Obaidul Islam on Tuesday to discuss ways to strengthen educational cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting, held at the Vice-Chancellor's office, focused on expanding academic collaboration, promoting joint research and enhancing faculty and student exchange programmes.

During the discussion, the High Commissioner highlighted the strong interest shown by Bangladeshi students in the Allama Iqbal Scholarships offered under the Pakistan-Bangladesh Knowledge Corridor initiative.

Both sides agreed that education remains one of the strongest foundations for promoting mutual understanding, expanding collaboration and strengthening people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Later, the High Commissioner and the Vice-Chancellor jointly inaugurated a computer laboratory and renovated classroom facilities at the Department of Urdu of the University of Dhaka, sponsored by the Pakistan High Commission.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Obaidul Islam said the Department of Urdu, established on July 1, 1921, is one of the university's oldest academic departments.

He noted that the department has made significant contributions to the study of language, literature and culture for more than a century and thanked the Pakistan High Commission for supporting its development.

In his remarks, High Commissioner Imran Haider said the initiative reflects the shared commitment of Bangladesh and Pakistan to advancing education, promoting cultural understanding and investing in future generations.

He also praised the University of Dhaka for preserving and nurturing its Urdu Department, describing it as a symbol of the institution's commitment to linguistic diversity, literary scholarship and cultural exchange.

The High Commissioner wished the department's faculty members and students continued success and expressed confidence that educational and cultural cooperation between the two countries would continue to deepen.
